Introduction to Digital Recreation & Online Gaming
This course introduces children to playing in a digital space. In a safe and controlled environment, students will be introduced to the tools for communicating with friends online as well as the appropriate ways to interact with people you know and don’t know. Learning the basic tools for gaming online and idea sharing will be the primary focus of this course.
Using digital sandbox games such as Minecraft, Terraria, Starbound & Stardew Valley we seek to teach students the basics of communicating and sharing ideas in a way that promotes team work.
This course is offered for children ages 6 through 12. We recommend that a student’s reading level is at least level E to get the most benefit from the course. A tablet, phone or computer with internet access is required for this class, as well as the purchase of the game we will be using.
We also recommend that parents of younger learners join them for the first few classes to assist with setup and to help them get comfortable attending class on their own.
This class will be offered as a “pay what you can” course and will provide your kids a framework of not only how to play with friends online, but also what is appropriate behavor to expect and tolerate within all digital spaces.
